My grandma gave me a Microsoft Surface RT for my birthday (which isn’t until tomorrow). I wasn’t too sure what use I would have for it until I discovered it’s fucking awesome at playing anime! For those not in the know, anime files use what’s called an .MKV format which almost no tablet can play well, it’s either choppy or the sound messes up or something. The RT? Perfect. Also it has A FULL SIZE USB! That means I can plug in flash drives/ hard drives/ keyboards/ etc. and it all works. Also the built in kickstand is pretty legit! So as a device for watching anime (or any type of video) it’s brilliant!

What are you using? I ended up buying this mobile.HD media player app back when I used my Dell XPS 10.

You can do it on Android too, but in a hilariously more complicated way! USB OTG + Flash drive + MX Player app + .MKV codec for app.

I just use VLC for android, never had an issue playing any file format and I didnt have to download any codecs.

Doesn’t the Surface RT run Windows 8.1? For what it’s worth a friend has PTC Creo (a CAD package) on a Surface and it runs fine, it’s really more laptop-based than a phone-derivative like most tablets.

iirc Surface RT runs on Windows Phone and the Surface Pro runs full windows. The new Surface 3 (which replaces the RT) also runs full windows - although the specs are only comparable to netbooks.

Surface RT runs Windows RT, which is a bit like iOS compared to OS X, no full programs only apps from the store.

MS ditched RT for 8.1 and 10. The Surface Pro lines have always been full Windows, and the new Surface 3 is as well.

The Pros are basically a laptop with all their guts under the screen. The Surface 3 is a little better than a netbook, but not quite a full-on laptop. It will do just fine for most people, but if you are trying to render video or play the newest PC games you'll need better hardware.

I have a Pro 3 and think it's great. I ditched my PC tower at work and use my Pro 3 there, then I only have to un-dock it and bring it home with me.

Ah, learned something new today, thanks for the explanation. She must have a Surface Pro then.
